IPv6: The Next-Generation Internet Protocol

The current internet protocol (IP), IPv4, is running out of addresses, so we’re getting ready for the next round. IPv6 is all about more and it includes significant enhancements for business. For example, it means the opportunity to establish connectivity with the goods you sell. (How about an IP-enabled dishwasher?) It’s a good idea to understand IPv6 for the variety of ways it may affect you.

IPv6 will help your business work smoother, from the inside out. Leaps in functionality include built-in security, with robust protection for your networks; automatic configuration, which means no more address hunting; improved QoS (Quality of Service); and better real-time response—think video conferencing, without the jitters.

With IPv6, almost everything can be networked, from phones and other mobile devices to products at your customers’ sites—yes, even that dishwasher. You could stay in touch for remote troubleshooting, device management or create new value-added services you haven’t even thought of yet.

By the way, if you plan on doing business with the federal government, or have customers or suppliers in Japan or China, get on board with IPv6. These players have deadlines for adopting IPv6 (e.g., 2008 for the Department of Defense). China has created CNG, an IPv6 backbone network, as the core of the country’s web infrastructure.

IPv6 was designed to co-exist with IPv4, so it will be possible to move to the newer protocol in stages during the next few years. Soon IPv6 will dominate, and organizations that are early adopters can gain some competitive advantage.
