Bring the Tradeshow to Your Desktop

If you're looking for new vendors or customers, but you don't have a big travel budget, consider the benefits of a virtual trade show. Providers like GoExhibit (www.goexhibit.com), OneSource (www.worldwidebrands.com) and InXpo (www.inexpo.com) provide shows and conferences that share a lot with their physical counterparts, including seminars, exhibit booths manned by real people and networking events.

Virtual shows run directly in your internet browser without the need for any additional downloads or installations, and once in the show you can explore the exhibitor booths, attend seminars and chat with the exhibitors in real time. Unlike a traditional show though, you can access the trade floor from your office, day or night, and without the time and financial costs often associated with trade show attendance.

There are some key ways to maximize your attendance when going virtual. Steve Epner, an industry expert, suggests that you plan your time for the show as if you were going to be out of town. Close your door, silence your phone, and mark your calendar as busy. Planning ahead will allow you to zero in on particular vendors to visit, and key educational keynotes or webinars. And because cost is not an issue, invite additional staff to attend to get better coverage of all the show has to offer.

"Smart retailers are embracing the latest technology for the next-generation consumer," says Eric Biener, Director of Webinars and Digital Events for Nielsen Business Media. "Virtual trade shows reduce the costs for attendees and exhibitors, but still provide the benefits associated with a physical show."
